An introduction to all new students from Alex Bird, Year 7 On my first day at Fakenham High School I was worried about the usual things that go through your mind when you come to a new school, things like: Have I got enough money? Will I get lost? Will I be bullied for it afterwards? These were going through everyone’s minds so never feel you’re the only one who’s worrying, because you’re not. On my first day, I felt I had a head start because my sister had just started Year 10 so I’d been into the school buildings more than some people, but that didn’t stop me being nervous. We very quickly got to know our form tutors because the first day of term was just for Year 7 and their Year 10 guides. Our timetables were handed out and we filled in our planners, which includes a homework diary for the whole year. The rest of the day also went well. We had a 20 minute break and at half past one went for lunch which was great. I had the right amount of money for a hot lunch but you can bring packed lunch too. If you’re short of things to do at lunch you can join a club: there’s a homework club in room L1, sports clubs at the sports centre and a whole bunch of other stuff. There’s even a countryside club. People always worry about the amount of homework to be done. There will be more than at your old school but not as much as you think. Any stories you may hear about bullying are not true, in fact most of the older kids go out of their way to help you out. I guess that’s all you need to know but if you have any questions just ask your teachers -they’re not as strict as people make out. Good luck (but you probably won’t need it). ... and from Olivia Symington, Head Girl 2009/2010 Being new is often scary, but it’s also an exciting time, offering the opportunity to have new experiences and make new friends. The great thing about starting in Year 7 is that everyone’s new and everyone’s facing new challenges together. In the first few weeks it’s a good idea to look at what’s on offer and see what interests you, as the School offers such a wide range of clubs and activities, such as the many music ensembles and sports teams, but also Team-Eco, the Jellybean drama club and the Latin classes after school. Getting involved in any of these clubs means meeting new people, many of whom will be in a different class, or even a different year group. When I joined Fakenham High School, I was in Year 9 and the only new person in my year. Although I’m the Head Girl now, I was very shy at first, but I talked to my form tutor and she really helped me to settle. If there’s anything that worries you, talk to your form tutor, head of year, or one of the many prefects, and they’ll help you. During my time at Fakenham High School, the teachers have helped me to achieve my potential, and I am grateful to them for the high standard of teaching. For the next two years I will be doing A Levels at Fakenham College and then I hope to go on to study Law at University. Good luck in your first year at Fakenham High School. I hope that when you get to the point that I’m at, getting ready to leave School, you can look back on great memories of good friends and happy times. |
